Old Indonesian Banknotes – 1963 10 Rupiah & 1987 1000 Rupiah | Historical Rupiah Collection
Indonesia has a rich monetary history reflected in its vintage banknotes. Recently, I revisited two old Indonesian Rupiah notes from 1963 and 1987 — modest in condition, yet meaningful in history.
Among them, the 1963 note is particularly personal, as it shares the same birth year as mine.
10 Rupiah 1963 – A Banknote as Old as Me
The 10 Rupiah note issued in 1963 represents an early period of Indonesia’s monetary development after independence. During that era, banknotes were printed with classic design elements, detailed patterns, and official signatures from Bank Indonesia authorities.
Although this note is in circulated condition with visible folds and signs of age, it remains an authentic historical piece. What makes it even more meaningful to me is that it shares the same year as my birth — 1963 — making it not only a collectible item, but also a personal reminder of time passing.

Time has left visible marks on the paper, just as it does in life.
1,000 RUPIAH 1987
1,000 Rupiah 1987 – Raja Sisingamangaraja XII
The 1,000 Rupiah banknote from 1987 features Raja Sisingamangaraja XII, one of Indonesia’s national heroes who resisted colonial rule. His presence on this note reflects Indonesia’s effort to honor historical figures through its currency design.
Compared to earlier banknotes, the 1987 series shows more modern printing techniques and stronger color composition. Even in circulated condition, this note represents an important phase in Indonesia’s financial and cultural history.
